History

Ausherman Homes was born in 1951 when Ernie Ausherman, a foreman for a commercial masonry contractor, left his job to build homes in Frederick City. At that time, Ernie’s home-building experience was limited to the construction of his own single-family residence on Military Road in Frederick, but he was determined to create a business that would make a positive impact on the community he loved.

For the next seven years, Ernie’s experience—and his business—grew. Ausherman Homes were built on Schley and Taney Avenues on the west edge of Frederick, next to what was then rural countryside and a developing army base. In 1958, Ernie purchased a 150-lot community called Clover Hill in Frederick County. In 1962, he added the 150-lot community of Wyngate in Frederick City. His company built single-family homes exclusively during the 1950s and 1960s and matured to a steady pace of building 50 to 70 homes a year by the 1970s.

Ernie’s second son Marvin graduated from Miami University in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and, after a short stint with a local architect, he joined his father’s firm to support the design, sales, and estimating efforts. Marvin’s role in the company expanded as the company expanded, with townhomes in Colony Village in the 1980s, followed by Waterside, Clover Hill III, and Deerfield—all in Frederick County—and Whittier in Frederick City.

On December 22, 2000, the Ausherman family and the community at large mourned the death of Ernie from Parkinson’s disease. In 2003, Marvin decided to sell the home-building business and focus his efforts on residential and commercial development with Ausherman Properties.
